Die Sinker EDM (Also called Ram or Plunge EDM) creates extremely precise cavities in any metal capable of conducting electricity. Sinker EDM uses a custom machined electrode (die) that is plunged into the workpiece in a tank of dielectric fluid.
With Electrical Discharge Machining, the cutting is done by an arc that is generated between the electrode and workpiece, which means that there is not physical contact between the two, so very fine shapes can be cut without the problems associated with traditional machining (deflection, heat distortion, etc.). Internal pockets are cut far more easily, accurately, and economically with this technology than with conventional machining.
At Star One EDM, we have two Die-Sinking EDM machines, with the ability to handle workpieces up to 2200 lbs. with 14” of ram travel. One of our units has fine-finish circuitry for complicated carbide machining.
